16TH & DOLORES COMMUNITY MURAL PROJECT
May 20-June 4, 2021

For the past 15 years, I have loved living and making art in this sunshiny corner of the city, and now I’m happy to send my preschooler, Ziggy, to Children’s Day School, next door to the mural site. I am deeply committed to helping make our Mission Dolores neighborhood more creative and more connected. You may have noticed my new murals of surreal clouds brightening up the boarded-up doors of the historic Mission Dolores Basilica, as well as my recent mural in front of 18 Reasons (next to Bi-Rite Creamery) that incorporated brushstrokes from over fifty neighborhood kids! After completing the Mission Dolores Basilica murals, Father Francis invited me to paint a mural on their blue, textured, corner wall across the street, and my hope in accepting this project is that we will not only paint some beautiful public art, but that the process itself will create a bright spark of community connection and shared respect for our dynamic micro-hood.

I have asked many of our neighboring community groups and schools near the mural site to collaborate with me on the first underpainting layers of the mural (outdoors, masked and safely distanced), and I want to invite you all out to paint with me too! I’ve learned that by creating art in the public realm, and making time/space to engage and share the creative process with people, we are able to ignite a magical point of connection and learning, where everyone involved feels a sense of empowerment and inclusion, having contributed their unique brushstrokes to beautify a place they call home.

I am self-funding and producing this project simply because I love my Mission fam, but if you feel called to contribute, I would be super grateful, and will put all money towards paint, supplies, and possibly hiring artists to assist. Please be in touch or pop by if you would like to paint with me, or if you have a class or other community group you would like to bring for a visit. If you are a photographer or media partner, I’m definitely interested in documenting as much as possible, growing the outreach, and potentially looking to host this project online for continued interactivity with a digital key for understanding mural elements and it’s creation process. Many thanks to respected Ramaytush Ohlone leader Dr. Jonathan Cordero for taking time and energy to consult with me on this mural project, and thanks to Mission Dolores Parish for opening up the wall for public art! THANK YOU ALL FOR READING THIS FAR AND FOR ALL YOUR AMAZING SUPPORT!!! LET’S MAKE SOME MAGICAL ART TOGETHER!

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I acknowledge that this mural is located on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples. As the original stewards of this land, the Ramaytush Ohlone understood the interconnectedness of all things and maintained harmony with nature for millennia, and I honor the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples for their enduring commitment to Mother Earth.

I am excited and honored to embark upon this 150-foot-long mural wall wrapping around the SE corner of the historic 16th & Dolores intersection, across the street from the old Mission Dolores. My plan is to create a colorful, impressionistic painting envisioning the landscape of this ancient gathering place before San Francisco was built, featuring the incredible native wildflowers and plants that were cultivated on this land by the Ramaytush Ohlone People, the original inhabitants of this peninsula.

By inviting passersby to picture the blooming flora and the views from here-- the grassy marshlands (or maybe Laguna Dolores?!) shimmering just down the hill-- I hope to share knowledge and show respect for the Indigenous plants and people of this sacred land. By inviting brushstrokes and collaborative painting from many different neighborhood groups and local kids, I aim to create a radically inclusive art project to connect our entire Mission community.
